The Compendium is foremost an identification manual for soil fungi. The original text was digitized, allowing the taxonomic parts to be revised, and the chapters to be reformatted and, where appropriate, rearranged. The appearance of a new edition after 27 years is a testament to the tenacity of Professor Gams to ensure that this information, to which he has devoted much of his career, remains available to contemporary biologists, now in one well‐bound A4 volume. Despite this, it found its way into many institutional libraries, and when it was reprinted in 1993 its value as a taxonomic monograph and source of species‐linked biological information was well‐ established. The first edition, published in two volumes in 1980, was expensive for its time (US$192). The brick red cover and much of the contents of this book will be familiar to soil biologists working with fungi. Compendium of Soil Fungi, second edition, taxonomically revised by W. Anderson, Compendium of Soil Fungi ‐ by K.H.
